Whenever the annals of this world are written & earthly delights are collated, freshly baked bread will be in the top echelon. The smell & taste of freshly baked bread has to be among the joys of life.

Bread and I have had a chequered history.

Right beside my school was Unity Bakery, just where the Bus Stop by the same name is in Mile 5, Port Harcourt.

Oh, the whiff of freshly baked bread during the morning classes and other times when they were baked. I literally grew up savoring the smell of bread as it sometimes drifted to my home from there.

Some mornings we actually got a taste of the bread as Mama served bread for breakfast. She or any designated by her left home early for the 2 – 3 miles walk to the Bakery to buy the early morning bakes. It was usually tea (milk, chocolate and sugar drink) with the bread. There are several grand ways to eat bread but nothing compared to bread & groundnut & on rare occasions with coke.

Although I am not currently a fan of bread – I can do without it really – but I think that whenever the annals of this world are written & earthly delights are collated, freshly baked bread will be in the top echelon.

The smell & taste of freshly baked bread has to be among the joys of life.
